What Are Prachovské skály?

Just 6 kilometres from the centre of Jičín lie the Prachovské skály — the Prachov Rocks — one of the most spectacular sandstone formations in the Czech Republic. Part of the Bohemian Paradise (Český ráj) UNESCO Geopark, this dense labyrinth of towering rock pillars, narrow gorges, and forested plateaus is the most visited natural attraction in the Jičín area, and for very good reason.

The formations were shaped over millions of years as wind, water, and frost carved the soft Cretaceous sandstone into the dramatic landscape visible today. The result is a network of routes that can take anywhere from two hours to a full day to explore.

Trail Overview

The rock area has a well-maintained trail network managed by the Czech Tourist Club (KČT). All main paths are colour-coded:

  • Red trail (main circuit): The classic loop covering the most dramatic formations, viewpoints, and the ruins of Prachov Castle. Approximately 4–5 km, suitable for most visitors.
  • Blue trail: A longer route that connects to the wider Bohemian Paradise trail network.
  • Yellow trail: A shorter option good for families with young children.

The terrain involves steps, narrow passages, and uneven surfaces. Sturdy footwear is strongly recommended. Most of the area is accessible to reasonably fit adults; some sections with ladders and steep steps are best avoided with pushchairs or for those with mobility difficulties.

Highlights Not to Miss

  1. Vyhlídka (Main Viewpoint): The panoramic platform above the rock labyrinth offers views stretching across the Bohemian lowlands to distant hills. On clear days you can see the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains) to the north.
  2. Prachov Castle ruins: Medieval fortification built directly into the rock face. The ruins are modest but the setting is extraordinary.
  3. The narrow gorges: Several passages between rock walls are so tight that visitors must turn sideways. They're great fun and entirely safe.
  4. Rock windows and arches: Natural stone openings frame views back into the forest — popular photography spots.

Getting There from Jičín

Prachovské skály is easily reached from Jičín by several means:

  • On foot: A marked hiking trail leads directly from the Jičín town centre — approximately 6 km each way. Allow 1.5 hours per direction.
  • By bicycle: A cycle path connects Jičín to the rock entrance. The route is flat and suitable for all fitness levels.
  • By car: A car park sits at the main entrance. An entrance fee is charged for both the car park and the reserve itself.
  • By bus: Seasonal shuttle buses run from Jičín during the summer months; check current timetables at the tourist information centre.

Practical Tips

  • Arrive early on summer weekends — the site gets very busy by midday in July and August.
  • Bring water and snacks; there is a basic refreshment stand at the entrance but limited options inside.
  • Dogs are welcome on a leash.
  • The reserve is open year-round, though winter visits (November–March) are quieter and uniquely atmospheric with frost and occasional snow.
  • Combine with a visit to nearby Kost Castle for a full day out.

Bohemian Paradise Geopark Context

Prachovské skály sits within the Český ráj (Bohemian Paradise) Geopark, which received UNESCO recognition in 2015. The geopark encompasses a remarkable variety of geological, natural, and cultural heritage across the broader Jičín region. Visiting the rocks is not just a hike — it's a journey through deep geological time.
